Merit Construction, Inc. is an award-winning Knoxville-based General Construction firm with more than 40 years of experience. We currently have a full-time opening for the Director of Business Development.

The position requirements include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: The Director of Business Development is responsible for leading Merit’s Business Development efforts by promoting, fostering, developing, and cultivating new business opportunities, as well as promoting and supporting business opportunities with existing customers.   Establishing a presence in the community through professional organizations, networking opportunities, and charitable organizations.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Strategic Leadership: Assists with the development of the company’s business development plan through the development of a sales strategy that includes clear definitions of the ideal customer & ideal project. Organizes and implements company’s strategy for business development by engaging other team members to achieve the company’s business development goals. Builds relationships by actively engaging in professional & community organizations. Maintains a positive company image with customers & potential customers.
  • Project Pipeline: Actively collaborate with the CEO, President, Director of Preconstruction, Director of Project Management, Director of Field Operations, and Project Executives to cultivate customer relationships, maintain a healthy level of backlog to support the company’s objectives, strategy, values, and goals.  Will be accountable for sales tracked against established goals.
  • Risk Management: Lead weekly BD Meeting with the CEO, President, Director of Preconstruction, Director of Project Management, Director of Field Operations, and Project Executives to evaluate potential pursuits for the adherence to a go/no-go process to avoid projects and customers that are not in alignment with the company’s strategy, values, and goals.
  • Preconstruction: Lead company’s efforts related to responding to RFQs and RFPs.
  • Financial: Collaborate with the CEO, President, & CFO in the establishment of the Business Development budget.
  • Systems: An effective business development strategy requires an organized and deliberate approach.  Assumes the primary role of ensuring that the company’s opportunity management system (CRM) meets the needs of and is maintained to support the company’s strategic efforts.
  • Communication: Clearly communicates the company’s mission, vision, values, & strategy. Has a commitment to maintain clear & current communication that creates positive working relationships.
  • Values and Ethical Standards Management: Represents and acts as the company’s ethical base of values, culture, and philosophy.

Essential Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Experienced leader with appropriate industry experience that leads by example and goes above and beyond when necessary
  • S. or B.A. in Business
  • Sound judgment, decisive, and “big picture” perspective
  • Demonstrated ability to track and meet timelines in a fast past environment
  • Ability to exercise strong leadership and enroll others to follow
  • Ability to lead change while minimizing tension, resistance, and anxiety
  • Ability to confront conflict and effectively influence resolution
  • Solid computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to developing and manage department budgets
  • Proven track record of building relationships with customers
    • Strong desire to succeed and be held accountable for results
