Merit Construction, Inc. is an award-winning Knoxville based General Construction firm with 40 years of experience. We currently have a full-time opening for an Estimator.

The position requirements include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:  The Estimator provides estimating services and contributes to bid day process to ensure the lowest possible complete bid to win.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists with response to RFPs
  • Participates in presentations to clients
  • Participates in group estimating effort that includes project managers
  • Executes strategies, techniques, etc. that lead to best chance to win projects
  • Helps identify & document special restriction that might affect the job
  • Reviews specifications, drawings, addenda, etc. to determine scope of work required to assemble a complete & accurate estimate
  • Completes final estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness, prior to formal quotation
  • Investigates value engineering options
  • Completes quantity takeoff & pricing to fully understand the scope of work to be included in the estimate
  • Reviews subcontractor quotes for completeness and accuracy ensuring that scope gaps and overlaps do not exist
  • Assists with negotiating contracts as required
  • Assists in the preparation of studies, materials and methods, recommendations, and cost estimates as required by clients or management
  • Participates in project hand-off meetings
  • Makes site visits to job sites and attend pre-bid meetings prior to bidding
  • Assists with budget estimates from limited design information (e.g. SD & DD level drawings)
  • Maintain historical database of project estimates & proposals
  • Maintains database with current contact information for subcontractors and vendors
  • Request quotations; organizes, reviews and logs quotes received
  • Performs post-bid analysis (i.e. “bid tabs”)
  • Participates in bid review meetings with owner or owner’s representatives, when required
  • Assists with making phone calls or running copies of documents, proposals, as needed
  • Delivers major bids, picks up drawings and other miscellaneous bid-related errands

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • 4 year building construction or engineering degree
  • 3-5 years of construction preferred
  • Advanced math and computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent organizational, supervisory and decision making/problem solving skills
